SPAR Hungary expands eco-friendly packaging solutions

August 26, 2020 IN THE CATEGORY: Environment, Responsible retailing

SPAR Hungary has added two eco-friendly packaging products to the range available at INTERSPAR Hypermarkets throughout the country. The new additions are a washable Snack’n’Go food bag and Boc’n’Roll washable sandwich packaging material.

The BPA-free, vegan, washable Snack’n’Go food bag is made of durable material and designed for everyday use. The stain repellent material on the inside of the bag does not allow moisture to pass through, yet is perfectly air-permeable. It can be used for fruit and vegetables, sandwiches, seeds, to name just a few examples.

The Boc’n’Roll washable sandwich packaging material is an excellent alternative to disposable packaging materials such as aluminium foil. The Boc’n’Roll comes in different sizes and can be used to pack sandwiches, bakery products or fruit in an environmentally friendly way. The BPA-free, vegan, machine washable material is a simple and durable solution to reduce waste in everyday life.

“The challenge of a sustainable future is how to decrease household plastic waste and maintain the comfort of shopping and everyday life at the same time. SPAR Hungary is constantly increasing its environmentally conscious products, which have been received positively by customers. We hope that the new products will be as popular”, explained Márk Maczelka, Head of Communications at SPAR Hungary.

In May 2020, SPAR Hungary launched reusable bags for fruit & vegetables and bakery products. Last year, SPAR Hungary started trialling the use of reusable silicone covers on own brand sandwich spreads and certain dairy products. These reusable and easy-to-clean covers help preserve the quality of opened products.

SPAR Hungary is active in multiple areas of sustainable development – including environmental protection, healthy lifestyles, food safety, and employee support. For more information on SPAR Hungary’s sustainability initiatives, please visit: www.sparafenntarthatojovoert.hu.

About SPAR Hungary

The first SPAR Supermarket opened in Hungary in 1992, following the acquisition by ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG) of a majority stake in General Kereskedelmi Rt. Since its launch, SPAR Hungary has been actively involved in the development of the retail industry in the country.

The move to license independent retailers to operate the SPAR Brand has proven successful for Hungary, with new stores meeting the needs of a larger number of shoppers. The retailers benefit from becoming part of the SPAR organisation with access to own brand products, operating systems and the brand, whilst consumers enjoy the increased number of store locations.
