SPAR Hungary strives to improve energy efficiency in stores, logistics centres, food production plants, and offices. With almost 60% of energy used being electricity, renewable solutions for electricity production are constantly being explored. In 2023, SPAR Hungary generated 779 GJ (216,419 kWh) of renewable energy from photovoltaic systems installed on its stores. With a new project, this production capacity is expected to grow.
New investment in the INTERSPAR Hypermarket in Pécs consists of a photovoltaic system and battery storage with smart control, enabling not only production of renewable energy, but to also store electricity for peak consumption hours. The system allows the hypermarket to save money with self-generated power and be less dependent on the local electricity grid.
“For SPAR, environmental sustainability is extremely important” says Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary, adding that “with the investments in improving energy efficiency, in 2023, the company’s total energy consumption was cut by more than 5.5% compared to the year before.”
Recent investment is part of the ongoing sustainability project, with photovoltaic systems already installed last year in stores across the cities of Szeged, Dorog, Pécs and Göd.
