Download imageAn eight-year collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association supports people with Down syndrome in developing autonomy, social and nutritional skills, healthy habits and hygiene. The partnership favours independent living and inclusion. Through the agreement, participants receive culinary training that enables them to acquire basic cooking techniques and skills. Since the programme’s activities were introduced in 2023, approximately 200 have been held.
For six years, the Mi Hijo y Yo Association has received support for the wellbeing of families with children affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). The agreement with SPAR Gran Canaria helps finance the annual costs of psychological support and care services for vulnerable families with children with PDD or ASD. Recently, a new centre opened, providing a more complete learning environment for minors and their families.
Several SPAR Gran Canaria teams recently promoted healthy eating habits and digital tools among older people taking part in Grandparents’ Day. The event paid tribute to older people and recognised their important role in families and the wider community. Recipes handed down through generations can support healthier eating by using familiar produce.
The 250 participants could receive help downloading mobile applications, opening up new opportunities such as online shopping and access to healthy recipes through My SPAR Club.
Participation in Grandparents’ Day reinforces SPAR Gran Canaria’s commitment to older people and to healthy eating as a way to promote wellbeing and autonomy. It also maintains the close link with local commerce that characterises its relationship with Canarian families.

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together and sought a suitable solution. The brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain when SPAR Spain was granted a licence to trade under the brand by SPAR International. Together, 13 regional SPAR wholesalers actively continue to build the brand’s presence across the mainland and the islands.
