SPAR Gran Canaria’s community involvement

October 21, 2020 IN THE CATEGORY: Community, Responsible retailing

SPAR Gran Canaria is involved in various community initiatives, from sponsoring the music education project ‘Barrios Orquestados’ and the Down Syndrome Association to promoting healthy living habits in partnership with the Spanish Association against Cancer. In this article, we take a look at just a few of the responsible retailing activities the SPAR Partner is supporting.

Empowering children with music

For the fourth year in a row, SPAR Gran Canaria is supporting the social and pedagogical project ‘Barrios Orquestados’, which brings music education to neighbourhoods in the Canary Islands that have greater difficulty accessing cultural events. The signing of the extended collaboration agreement was carried out by the Canarian musician and composer who leads the project, José Brito, together with SPAR Gran Canaria’s President, Ángel Medina, and Vice President, José Lopez.

By financially supporting this non-profit project, SPAR Gran Canaria joins the important objective of promoting cultural education among the most fragile groups, such as children.

Promoting a healthy lifestyle

SPAR Gran Canaria and the Las Palmas Provincial Board of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) signed a collaboration agreement on 1 October 2020 to promote healthy lifestyle habits and measures for cancer prevention.

The agreement was signed by Fernando Fraile, President of the AECC in Las Palmas, and SPAR Gran Canaria President Ángel Medina. Among the initiatives is the ‘Healthy Neighbourhoods’ project. This initiative offers cancer patients and their families a selection of recipes and recommended eating habits through workshops and cooking shows. SPAR Gran Canaria will donate the food products used during these events.

Furthermore, AECC will acquire SPAR vouchers for its social aid scheme. Beneficiaries of the Association will be able to exchange the vouchers for food products in any of the 190 SPAR stores on the Island. SPAR Gran Canarias’ employees will also benefit from the agreement through the AECC programme ‘Your health comes first’, which provides practical advice on cancer prevention by adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

Support of local Down Syndrome Association

For the second consecutive year, SPAR Gran Canaria is supporting the training and awareness campaign of the local Down Syndrome Association. SPAR contributes to the integration of young people with Down Syndrome, for example, through the inclusion in the teams of their supermarkets.

The Association’s manager, Herminia Pérez, was joined by Ángel Medina and José López, when the agreement was signed. He was delighted that “SPAR has committed one more year to the service the Association provides, both to people with Down Syndrome and to their families.”
