SPAR Gran Canaria strives to give support to local institutions that provide invaluable assistance to vulnerable members of society, within the scope of its sustainability programme.

Spring Harvest Collection

During a campaign held from 23-25 May, SPAR Gran Canaria supermarkets offered consumers the possiblity to donate much needed goods to the local Food Bank during the Spring Harvest collection initiative. For over 25 years, SPAR Gran Canaria has collaborated with the Las Palmas Food Bank enabling those in need to access vital foods. The Spring Harvest collection in 2024 resulted in 28,863kg of food being donated, thanks to strong support from local communities.

Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente

In another initiative, a commitment to the Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente which supports families of minors undergoing cancer treatment, has been renewed. SPAR Gran Canaria strengthened its commitment to the Foundation by subsidising the maintenance costs of the kitchen of the residence which was inaugurated in March 2023 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This home was created with the aim of offering free and dignified accommodation to families of children undergoing cancer treatment who move from other islands to receive treatment at the Maternal and Children’s Hospital.

Among the activities that SPAR Gran Canaria carries out together with the Foundation are healthy cooking workshops developed with a group of young people from Pequeño Valiente, aided by a dietitian.

This activity is conducted in several phases, including a visit to a SPAR supermarket, where young people learn to select products with an understanding of nutritional labels, with the goal of promoting conscious and informed purchasing decisions. Participants prepare food in the Foundation’s kitchen, using the selected products which facilitates Access to snacks of high nutritional value. This initiative enhances autonomy through active learning among participants, while promoting healthy eating habits.
