SPAR Gran Canaria implementing sustainability and community initiatives

SPAR Gran Canaria, as the biggest retailer on the island, has proceeded to drive sustainability locally with a focus on energy efficiency and responsible sourcing. Among other community initiatives, environmental topics continue to be a building pillar for their sustainability strategy.

Cold chain modernisation

In January 2025, SPAR Gran Canaria opened a new 5,000m² logistics platform in El Goro. In addition to the company’s other two logistics centres specialising in fruit and vegetable, as well as dry goods, the strategic location of the new logistics centre and six loading docks enable daily service to the 200+ stores on the island.

For the operations of this logistics centre, SPAR Gran Canaria has partnered with SISLOG SGA, a company specialising in logistics management for warehouses, industry, and retail stores. SISLOG SGA demonstrates its ability to orchestrate complex logistics flows between the different refrigerated and frozen storage areas, allowing SPAR Gran Canaria to reduce product travel and gain delivery efficiency. The flexibility of SISLOG warehouse management system (WMS) and its advanced configuration options have made it possible to manage these complex logistics processes and coordinate picking operations in the different cold storage facilities to ensure the fastest and most efficient flow possible, reducing energy use.

Dedication to local sourcing

On October 8th, SPAR Gran Canaria signed the agreement to promote the sale and consumption of the Valleseco Reineta apples for the fourth consecutive year. This action will allow the sale and distribution of approximately eight tons of this product in SPAR stores on the island.

The president of the island council, Antonio Morales, emphasised that island development programs like this one, in collaboration with the sector and public and private entities, “allow for improved food sovereignty quotas and dignify the work of the women and men working in the primary sector in Gran Canaria.”

With attention to their sourcing and supply chain, SPAR Gran Canaria continues to effectively embed sustainability into their business and minimise the negative environmental impact from their operations.
