October 8, 2019 IN THE CATEGORY: Supply Chain

SPAR Gran Canaria has invested €5.5 million in the development of the largest fruit & veg Distribution Centre (DC) on the Canary Islands. The clear objective behind this investment is to enhance the quality of products and optimise processes that will improve the standard of fresh produce being supplied to SPAR stores.

The addition of this new DC in Mercalaspalmas sees an increase of 36% in SPAR Gran Canaria’s supply and distribution capacity, allowing for the daily storage of more than 630,000 kg of fruit and vegetables, compared with the previous daily capacity of approximately 140,000 kg – 55% of which is directly sourced from local suppliers.

Almost 200 local farmers sell their produce to SPAR Gran Canaria. This number has increased by more than 40% in the last five years, demonstrating SPAR Gran Canaria’s commitment to supporting the local sector.

The new DC has two different docks for local fresh produce and internationally-sourced goods. It also includes a large refrigerated storage area of 3,400m², which is run by a state-of-the-art warehouse management system with voice picking technology, allowing for the better treatment of fruits and vegetables. The DC also includes six docks for delivery trucks, an office space, and changing rooms for employees.

In developing this new DC, significant measures were put in place in terms of environmental protection and energy efficiency.
