Held at the Scania Norway Hamar Service Centre, the SPAR International Driver Competition 2026 brought together 29 delegates across the SPAR network to put their skills to the test and share best practice in transport.

This was the fourth consecutive edition of the SPAR International Driver Competition, with successful events held since its introduction in 2023. The exciting competition took place this year at the Scania Norway Hamar Service Centre in Hamar, Norway. A total of 14 drivers and 15 transport specialists, alongside SPAR International, attended the competition this year. Delegates from SPAR country organisations including SPAR Ireland licensed operator BWG Foods, SPAR UK wholesalers Henderson Group and James Hall & Co. Ltd, as well as SPAR Norway, SPAR Austria, SPAR Hungary, DESPAR Italia, and SPAR Croatia were present.

Intense competition

Drivers completed a series of challenges that tested their road-safety knowledge, navigation, parking, braking, fuel efficiency, and ability to drive calmly and safely. The winner of ‘SPAR International Driver of the Year 2026′ came down to two local finalists, with SPAR Norway’s Bjørn Tore Nyhus taking home the coveted title and Ionathan Ruben Toader finishing in second place. Lazlo Filler from SPAR Austria rounded out the top three positions. All participants showcased excellence in their skills in vehicle management, professionalism, and teamwork.

Showcasing best practice

This year’s event featured more than just the SPAR International Driver Competition. Delegates joined an extended programme that included a visit to SPAR Norway logistics partner ASKO’s Oslofjord Distribution Centre and a tour of one of Norway’s most innovative maritime projects to see autonomous vessels in operation. These vessels are helping SPAR Norway and ASKO together to create emission-free transport across the Oslofjord to supply SPAR stores across the Oslo region and beyond, and show how technology is supporting the future of logistics and sustainability.
