The new range of 40-50 ready meals, branded under the ‘Fresh To Go’ label was developed in collaboration with Helamore, will be available in over 55 SPAR Supermarkets across Gran Canaria. Customers can find the range in the self-service sections instore, with the selection being tailored to each location. The ‘Fresh To Go’ assortment includes a variety of hot and cold dishes which will vary based on the season, including meat, pasta, rice, fish, salad, and desserts. Additionally, a selection of local Canarian recipes will be included.
The roll-out is in its initial stages, with between 20-30% of total capacity being available at present. Production is currently focused on supplying the ready meals line to over 55 SPAR Supermarkets in Gran Canaria. In future, SPAR Gran Canaria aims to offer the ‘Fresh To Go’ solution across all 196 SPAR Supermarkets on the island, as well as online through its e-commerce platform.
The launch of the range took place at the new ready meals factory located in Mercalaspalmas. The facilities comprise a refrigerated goods section, storage and meal preparation areas, a kitchen, a butchery, and a fish section, as well as packaging and dispatch zones. There is also a tasting room and testing kitchen aiding in the development of new recipes. The facility has a photovoltaic plant, which favours self-consumption, and an aerothermal system, making it a factory that is committed to energy efficiency. All the cooking processes are electric, and the factory has modern cooling, packaging, and labelling systems.
With this new line of ready meals, SPAR Gran Canaria is improving its production process, from meal development in the factory right through to the store floor. This ensures that product quality remains the same across all locations. The ready meals are packaged in a protective atmosphere, a technique that preserves all the organoleptic qualities of the food, enabling greater food safety, and are packaged in reusable BPA-free polypropylene packaging.
The president of SPAR Gran Canaria, Ángel Medina, said that “with our new line of ready meals, we continue to stay close to our customers, adapting to the changing habits of those consumers who are looking for a ready-to-go option, which saves them time when it comes to cooking, but without giving up a varied diet and quality products”.
