SPAR Gran Canaria facilitates access to culture in local communities

August 9, 2024 IN THE CATEGORY: Community, Responsible retailing

SPAR Gran Canaria has extended collaborations with the educational project Barrios Orquestados for the eighth consecutive year and renewed its agreement with the Fundación Canaria Ochosílabas. Both collaborations extend the commitment of SPAR Gran Canaria to support the well-being of the local community by reducing inequalities and fostering equal access to culture.

Educational project Barrios Orquestados

The project facilitates access to culture through musical training for minors and families in vulnerable situations. During the project, children can join orchestras for free with the possibility to loan preferred musical instruments.  The format helps families with limited economic resources to participate in musical training. Currently, the project has 218 participants in six locations in Gran Canaria. With the support of entities such as SPAR Gran Canaria, it has recently established a new location in the La Isleta area. This location features an exclusive orchestra of woodwind instruments, among other activities on site.

Collaboration agreement with the Fundación Canaria Ochosílabas

Another collaboration with the Fundación Canaria Ochosílabas focuses on the dissemination of the culture and traditions of the Canary Islands through preserving and disseminating the oral Canarian verse tradition. With support from SPAR Gran Canaria, the foundation has recently contributed to the celebration of the activities of the Clotilde Cruz Peña Verseadora School. The school brings together about twenty verseadoras and verseadores every week, preserving the traditions of Gran Canaria and involving community members.

Support for the communities

The renewed agreements are an inclusive part of the social commitment SPAR Gran Canaria has to add to the well-being of Canarian society. Promoting equal access to cultural and educational opportunities helps to preserve local heritage and strengthen the feeling of belonging and inclusion among the community members.

About SPAR Spain

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together. As a result, the brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain, having been granted a license by SPAR International. Together, 13 regional SPAR wholesalers actively continue the expansion of the brand across the country.
