This recurring food bank solidarity campaign, which previously took place over a weekend, was extended to a week for the second time this year. In June, the Operación Kilo campaign collected 24,800kg of basic foods from all 119 SPAR stores on the island.
Among the products donated are staple foods such as milk, oil, sugar, gofio, coffee, canned goods and preserves. These products are in high demand at the food bank.
The traditional system of physical food collection with the deployment of boxes at stores was authorized by the National Food Bank Federation. This way of collection, as opposed to the donation of financial means, was made possible thanks to the horizontal structure of the SPAR Gran Canaria group.
On 1 December, the President, Vice President and General Manager of SPAR Gran Canaria, Ángel Medina, José López and Dunia Pérez, respectively, gathered at the SPAR logistics centre at El Goro to hand over this important donation to representatives of the Las Palmas Food Bank.
After the ceremony, Dunia Pérez thanked the food bank for the important social work they carry out, which this year has assisted more than 28,500 people, up from the 20,000 people the organization served in previous years.
Ángel Medina also expressed his gratitude and appreciation to SPAR customers that have shown great solidarity by donating food to thousands of families in these difficult times.
