This initiative aims to collect food items to support over 1,000 individuals who were visitors of Caritas Gran Canaria’s soup kitchens in the first half of this year. Customers’ donations will benefit people who rely on food from one of the four locations operated by Cáritas on the island.
From October 5 to 8, the solidarity breakfasts campaign will transform 168 SPAR stores in Gran Canaria into food collection points. SPAR Gran Canaria is advising customers through various communication channels of much needed food items. Customers are encouraged to donate items such as milk, juices, biscuits, cereals, gofio (a local grain product), oil, spreads, and cocoa. The campaign’s launch event was held this week at the SPAR Supermarket Ángel Guimerá.
The primary goal of SPAR Gran Canaria and Rotary Club Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is to make it easier for families to access food for the most important meal of the day – breakfast. The campaign aims to collect as much food as possible, with the hope of surpassing last year’s impressive volume of over 9,000 kilograms.
SPAR Gran Canaria has collaborated with Cáritas on several initiatives including employment creation and annual food donations. SPAR retailers also support localised initiatives of Cáritas to raise funds for their community. In August of this year, funds were raised in the area of Agüimes by a retailer affiliated with SPAR Gran Canaria.

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organisation came together. As a result, the brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain, having been granted a license by SPAR International. Together, 13 regional SPAR wholesalers actively continue the expansion of the brand across the country.
