SPAR Gran Canaria celebrates local produce at annual Me Gusta Fair

February 26, 2020 IN THE CATEGORY: Responsible retailing

For the fifth year running, SPAR Gran Canaria has sponsored the Me Gusta (I like it) fair – the largest fair for local produce on the island – held earlier this month.

To showcase the advantages of local produce – freshness, nutritional value, quality, and a low carbon footprint – SPAR Gran Canaria presented its Del campo a tu mesa (from the field to your table) stand at the event. This stand emulated the journey made by local fruit and vegetables, from their collection in the orchards until they reach the tables of Gran Canaria’s families.

As part of its policy of offering customers the freshest and most natural products, SPAR Gran Canaria has created an exclusive brand named La Cosecha Canaria de SPAR (SPAR’s Canaria harvest), marketing the highest quality “0km” products sourced from local farmers.

SPAR Gran Canarias actively supports almost 200 farmers who grow a variety of fruits and vegetables in more than 400 plots across the island, thereby ensuring stability for the families that cultivate the land.

With 189 stores located in all the island’s municipalities, SPAR sells more than 40,000 tons of fruit and vegetables in Gran Canaria. A vast majority of this produce comes from local farmers, as well as from other islands in the archipelago. SPAR sources avocados, onions, and sweet potatoes from La Palma, tropical pineapples from El Hierro, as well as exotic fruits from Tenerife.

Fruit Art and Show Cooking

At the Me Gusta Fair, SPAR Gran Canaria also organised workshops for school groups. Under the supervision of a SPAR expert, children could create fruit art using local produce, familiarising them with the product and encouraging their consumption.

SPAR Gran Canaria also sponsored several cooking sessions by the renowned local chef Lolo Román, who prepared innovative delicacies with local products, including dishes such as zucchini pasta with local pesto and cherry tomatoes and Gazpacho of avocado and tomato.
