SPAR enters Icelandic market with opening of first stores

SPAR has been launched in Iceland, following the granting of a license to operate the SPAR brand in the market to Drangar hf by SPAR International in early 2026. The first two stores opened their doors Saturday, June 6 in Hafnarfjörður and in Barónsstígur, Reykjavik.

Expansion of the SPAR brand in Iceland

The opening of the first SPAR stores marks the entry of the internationally renowned brand into Iceland. SPAR Iceland will place strong emphasis on freshness, convenience, and a broad grocery assortment available to customers at competitive prices. Through the partnership between SPAR International and Drangar hf, the SPAR brand will be developed utilising international best practice to complement local expertise. Samkaup, an established Icelandic retailer which is part of the Drangar hf Group, will operate and develop the SPAR brand while leveraging the global expertise, sourcing capabilities, and retail knowledge within the SPAR network.

First stores officially open

The first two SPAR stores in Iceland opened their doors in Hafnarfjörður and in Barónsstígur, Reykjavik. The SPAR Hafnarfjörður supermarket provides a modern neighbourhood supermarket experience for both local residents and customers seeking fast, efficient shopping throughout the day. With over 300m2 of retail sales area, the supermarket offers approximately 3,600 products, including 300 SPAR Own Brand products. Instore, a strong emphasis is placed on fresh produce, bakery, coffee, and food-to-go solutions, alongside a broad convenience grocery assortment.

In Barónsstígur, located on a high-traffic route in the capital city of Reykjavik, the SPAR Barónsstígur supermarket provides a shopping experience tailored to meet the diverse needs of this area. This supermarket boasts a retail sales area of approximately 440m2, catering to a broad mix of local neighbourhood customers, commuters, and tourists. There are over 4,000 products on offer, including 300 SPAR Own Brand SKUs, with a strong focus on convenience, fresh food, bakery, coffee, and food-to-go solutions for both local customers and travellers.

Continued growth of the brand presence nationwide

The SPAR brand in Iceland will continue to grow through a conversion strategy, which will see the Krambúð, Kjörbúð, and 10–11 brands converted to SPAR stores. SPAR Iceland has also become a partner of the FH handball club, one of Iceland’s most successful sports clubs, solidifying the brand’s commitment to health, physical activity, and supporting local communities.
