SPAR Hungary and SPAR Slovenia share measures during Plastic-Free July, focused on reducing the volume of single-use plastic and plastic waste.

SPAR Hungary’s campaign

SPAR Hungary aims to reduce plastic waste among its customers and its over 14,000 employees. To promote plastic reduction, the company released a ten-part animated series called ÖKO KALAND (ECO ADVENTURE) on its YouTube page. This series educates preschoolers and pupils on the importance of sorted waste collection and avoiding single-use plastics. Additionally, the Tervezz okosan! (Plan Smartly!) publication, created in partnership with Nestlé Hungária, offers tips and information on environmentally-conscious consumption. The campaign was promoted via SPAR Hungary’s website, store posters, Instagram, flyers, and the MySPAR app throughout July.

Reusable products and shopping tips

To support the reduction of non-degradable waste, SPAR Hungary offers customers a reusable, easy-to-clean fruit and vegetable bag at a low price. Customers are encouraged to use reusable bakery bags, shopping bags made from recycled materials, and flasks instead of disposable bottles.

Employee and shopper engagement

SPAR Hungary also focuses on its team members by promoting sustainability practices to reduce plastic waste, paper, and water usage. Employees are encouraged to use personal mugs and flasks, conserve energy, use water sparingly, and separate waste. In July, SPAR Hungary also organised biodiversity and sustainability presentations for its employees. By rethinking consumer habits, planning shopping wisely, and using environmentally friendly products, everyone can help minimise waste. During the campaign, SPAR Hungary published useful tips on Instagram and encouraged shoppers with a prize draw.

SPAR Slovenia focus on sustainable shopping

SPAR Slovenia’s Head of Sustainability Masa Sprajcar-Rancic outlines her decade-long journey towards more sustainable shopping and highlighte ways to reduce waste. She shared her experiences, thoughts and advice in a column for Ecologists Without Borders/ Ekologi brez meja, a non-profit organisation founded in 2009 and one of the leading Slovenian NGOs dedicated to environmental improvement through efficient resource use and active citizenship.

Ecologists Without Borders supported SPAR Slovenia to create the SPAR Sustainable Shopping Guide, launched in April 2024. This 28-page guide, available on SPAR Slovenia’s corporate website, provides eco-friendly tips and useful information. It also includes a quiz for customers to assess the sustainability of their shopping habits.
