October 9, 2025 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

SPAR Austria has opened a new EUROSPAR supermarket in Ebenthal, Carinthia. The former 600m² SPAR supermarket was replaced with a new building on the same site. The new supermarket offers nearly 1,000m² of retail sales area, giving customers more space to shop and explore a wider selection of fresh food, everyday essentials, and regional specialities.

Hannes Kunzer, the SPAR retailer who has been serving the Ebenthal community since 2015, continues to manage the supermarket with his dedicated team, providing the best local supply in Ebenthal.

“With the new EUROSPAR supermarket in Ebenthal, we are taking an important step towards offering our customers a contemporary, regional and fresh shopping experience. Here, the highest quality and regionality are combined with a modern store presence. This means that Ebenthal remains well supplied,” said Paul Bacher, Managing Director of SPAR Carinthia and East Tyrol.

The supermarket has been completely redesigned to feel more modern, organised, and user-friendly. This creates a pleasant atmosphere and ensures that products are presented in the best possible way. The fresh food sections, particularly the delicatessen, fruit, and vegetable sections, stand out with a vibrant, market-like feel.

Convenience and smart solutions

The new EUROSPAR supermarket also brings more convenience and smart solutions. Alongside a broader product range and more regional offerings, customers benefit from features like the new deposit return system, which is now accessible from outside the store. The SPAR APP adds another layer of convenience with its digital deposit slip. Credits are transferred directly to the app and automatically deducted at checkout, eliminating the need for paper receipts and making the process more sustainable.

Sustainable thinking and modern implementation

Sustainability is at the heart of the new EUROSPAR supermarket Ebenthal, which was built with energy efficiency in mind. A rooftop photovoltaic system supplies environmentally friendly electricity, while waste heat from the refrigerated display cases is reused to heat the store via a modern heat recovery system, supported by an air heat pump. LED lighting and energy-saving modules in the refrigeration units further reduce energy consumption.

About SPAR Austria

The origins of the SPAR brand in Austria date back to 1954. The current SPAR AG was created in 1970 when the original founding families joined other regional wholesalers to form SPAR Austria AG, a 100% privately owned Austrian company. Company-owned stores operate throughout the country in the multi-format retail strategy developed since the 1960’s whilst independent retailers operate under sub-license from SPAR Austria and continue building the brand’s presence.
