SPAR Austria meets evolving demands with own brands and responsible retailing

May 12, 2020 IN THE CATEGORY: Own Brand and Suppliers

SPAR in Austria reached a sales milestone of €7.2 billion in 2019, with strong successes achieved in the areas of own brand development and responsible retailing.

Product range and own brands

In addition to a variety of branded products, SPAR offers 40 own brand ranges with about 7,500 food and non-food items. In Austria, the sales share of SPAR Own Brands accounts for over 40% of the total sales, with a sales growth of 5.4% in 2019. Many of these own brand products are also available in Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, and Northern Italy in which SPAR is operated as Austria SPAR International AG.

The organic own brand product line SPAR Natur*pur continues to be extremely successful. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, SPAR Natur*pur currently includes over 1,000 organic products and achieved a sales increase of over 16% compared to the previous year.

Following increased consumer demand, SPAR offers a further 670 organic products under other own brand ranges, such as SPAR PREMIUM and SPAR Vital. SPAR PREMIUM and S-BUDGET also achieved high growth rates of 10% and 8%, respectively, reflecting the ambivalent buying behaviour of consumers.

 Responsible retailing

An increasing number of consumers are demanding healthy, eco-friendly, and socially responsible products. SPAR Austria taps into this trend by focusing on resource-friendly production and packaging, as well as products with less sugar, no palm oil, no glyphosate, and high animal welfare standards.

SPAR also offers an extensive range of sustainable products, including 2,500 vegetarian/vegan and over 300 Fairtrade products. So far, over 1,000 tons of sugar and practically all palm oil were removed from SPAR Austria’s Own Brands. The use of glyphosate and genetic engineering are prohibited at SPAR. The fresh meat departments offer organic meat and meat from the corporate TANN factory, which processes domestic meat with an increased focus on animal welfare.

In 2019, SPAR launched a huge plastic reduction initiative. As part of this project, all product packaging was put to the test and alternatives to plastic were introduced, varying from customers bringing their own boxes to the delicatessen department to the self-filling of detergents at INTERSPAR Hypermarkets and reusable bottles for beverages.
