From mid-January 2025, SPAR Austria customers can support both the environment and a good cause while returning bottles and cans. At all deposit machines at SPAR Austria stores, customers can donate their deposit credit to the charity ‘Save the Child’ (Rettet das Kind) or receive the deposit amount as a refund.

For every disposable can or drink bottle returned, customers can donate €0.25 to charity. Throughout 2025, all donations collected at SPAR deposit machines will go to ‘Save the Child’.

“By letting customers donate their deposits, we can improve the lives of many children and families in need while protecting the environment. Together, we can make a big difference and build a better future for the next generation,” said SPAR Austria Board Member Markus Kaser.

New deposit system in Austria

Starting 1 January 2025, Austria will introduce a deposit system for single-use plastic bottles and metal cans (0.1 to 3 litres). This complements the existing reusable deposit system and ensures environmentally friendly disposal of packaging. Items like milk and syrup are excluded, and eligible packaging will carry a special one-way deposit logo.
