“Free trade is important, but it must never come at the expense of food safety and quality. SPAR Austria is clearly committed to Austrian agriculture and the highest standards – for example, in beef,” said SPAR Austria Board Member Markus Kaser.
Food is a sensitive product that requires special care. SPAR Austria has a clear policy in this regard and will continue to give preference to local food, especially fresh meat (beef, pork, veal). SPAR Austria has not sold beef from South America and will not do so in the future. This decision reflects SPAR Austria’s long-standing partnership with farmers. SPAR supports local farmers and focuses on short transport routes, transparent origin, and high standards throughout the entire value chain.
“For SPAR, it is clear: valuable and good food is produced where responsibility for people, animals, and the environment is taken seriously – and for SPAR Austria, that is primarily in Austrian agriculture,” Markus Kaser emphasises.

The origins of the SPAR brand in Austria date back to 1954. The current SPAR AG was created in 1970 when the original founding families joined other regional wholesalers to form SPAR Austria AG, a 100% privately owned Austrian company. Company-owned stores operate throughout the country in the multi-format retail strategy developed since the 1960’s, whilst independent retailers operate under sub-license from SPAR Austria and continue building the brand’s presence.
