Independent SPAR UK family retailer opens seventh store
The Uppal family, SPAR UK independent retailers based in the North of England, opened their seventh SPAR branded store on Barnsley’s Kendray estate.
The family, which owns six other convenience stores across the Greater Manchester and Cheshire areas, has broken new ground across the Pennines into South Yorkshire with this seventh store opening. Located on Barnsley’s Kendray estate, this new SPAR supermarket is well-positioned with a quality convenience offer for customers across over 200m2 of retail sales area, including a coffee offer, hot food counter, chilled food-to-go, and a snacking area. Additionally, customers can get their grocery essentials instore.
Independent retailers for 25 years
The Uppal family have been independent SPAR UK retailers for over 25 years, and opened their last SPAR supermarket in Rochdale two years ago, which has been a successful store. Terry Uppal highlighted the importance of growing the family business with new opportunities, and this new SPAR supermarket will bring new life to the area. With a modern design and layout, alongside the product assortment, the new SPAR supermarket will bring a quality shopping experience for customers.

Terry Uppal said: “We are still getting to know the community, but I think our customers are as happy as we are with the look and feel of the store and the range we have stocked.”
The seven stores owned by the Uppal family are serviced by SPAR UK wholesaler for the North of England, James Hall & Co. Ltd. The retail organisation helped the Uppal family with the launch of this store, giving the family business confidence to grow and take on new sites.
