Importance of plastic reduction in retail: Contact International

November 13, 2024 IN THE CATEGORY: Climate, Responsible retailing

Packaging is an imperative for any retail business. Every day, shoppers must discard various materials including plastic, paper, glass, and aluminium packaging from products bought in stores which then quickly fill up waste bins. Indeed, in 2021, the European Union (EU) generated 188.7kg of packaging waste per inhabitant, with 10.8 kg more per person compared to 2020, marking the biggest increase in 10 years.

In our recent issue of Contact International, we look at the European Parliament and European Council’s proposal of Regulation for Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR), marking significant changes in the European Union legislative arena.

This feature also highlights some of the solutions to reduce plastic waste currently undertaken by SPAR country organisations.
