INTERSPAR has been recognised as Austria’s ‘supermarket of the year 2019’ by environmental organisation Greenpeace. In four of the eight product groups assessed by the NGO, INTERSPAR was found to provide consumers with the best range of sustainable options. The NGO applauded INTERSPAR’s assortment of environmentally friendly reusable bottles in particular.

As part of its 2019 annual supermarket assessment, Greenpeace conducted a survey on the availability of sustainable products in a range of categories in different supermarkets in Austria. INTERSPAR Hypermarkets was found to provide shoppers with the most extensive ranges of sustainable seasonal vegetables, organic apple and orange juices, soft drinks in returnable bottles, and animal welfare-friendly pork. Regarding sustainable purchasing standards for own brand products and fish sold during the festive season, INTERSPAR Hypermarkets was ranked second.

“I am very pleased that our sustainable range has been rated so positively by Greenpeace. With the expansion of our reusable products range, initiatives such as organic meat at service counters, and the expanded range of unpackaged produce, we continue to work on providing the largest sustainable product assortment for our customers,” said Markus Kaser, Managing Director at INTERSPAR Austria.

Susanne Winter, Director Fundraising & Engagement and Deputy Managing Director at Greenpeace Austria, commented: “INTERSPAR convinced Greenpeace with its good test results in our annual market check, earning it the title of ‘supermarket of the year’. We particularly welcome the use of environmentally friendly reusable bottles. In this area, INTERSPAR was the leader with the most extensive range of refillable deposit-return bottles. And in 2020, the range of reusable bottles available at INTERSPAR stores nationwide will be expanded.”
