Third SPAR city store in Breda
In the south of the country, the city of Breda has welcomed its third SPAR city store. The new store offers a complete supermarket assortment for daily shopping, including fresh ingredients for a quick breakfast, healthy lunch or easy dinner. It also offers a variety of convenience foods and drinks for direct consumption, catering for passers-by, tourists and residents alike.
The owner of the new store, Djordy de Nooijer, already runs a SPAR city store in one of Breda’s main shopping streets and saw this as “a unique opportunity to offer customers even more daily convenience.”
SPAR neighbourhood store in Diepenheim
In the small city of Diepenheim in the province of Overijssel, a newly renovated SPAR neighbourhood store has opened. Owned by independent SPAR retailers, Gerreke and Albert Kleis, the modernised store is open 365 days a year and sees a lot of foot traffic thanks to the many tourists that visit Diepenheim, attracted by its art, culture and beautiful nature.
As an added convenience, the store now also offers an online shopping service, which customers can make use of all year round. The store range has been expanded with a wider choice of fresh fruits & vegetables, bread, pastries and cakes. There is also a larger selection of locally-sourced cheese and dairy products, and an assortment of locally-brewed beer.
The store now also features an inviting seating area where customers can enjoy a freshly made cup of coffee and other refreshments such as sandwiches, smoothies and yoghurt. This new part of the store will also be used to host community meetings and other gatherings – cementing the important role that SPAR Diepenheim plays in the small city of just 2,700 inhabitants.
In renovating the store, the owners have invested in sustainable technologies, including a new CO2 cooling system, LED lighting, and a heat recovery pump.

About SPAR Netherlands
The SPAR Brand was founded in the Netherlands in 1932 by the Dutch wholesaler, Adriaan van Well and 16 independent retailers. It was established as a voluntary chain of grocers under the name DESPAR – an acronym of a slogan created by van Well to describe the organisation: Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig, which translates in English to All benefit from joint co-operation. By the end of the 1950s, SPAR was the largest food organisation in the Netherlands.
Today, SPAR Netherlands is a private company, owned by Sligro (45%), Sperwer (45%) and the SPAR independent retailers (10%). The Head Office and Distribution Centre (DC) are located in Waalwijk, from where support is provided for the almost 400 stores in operation.
