Stefan Leuthold has handed over the operational management of SPAR Switzerland to Rob Philipson, formerly Managing Director of KwaZulu Natal DC in SPAR South Africa. Mr Leuthold remains a member of the Board of Directors of SPAR Holding as a minority shareholder .

Changes in SPAR Switzerland’s structure started last year with SPAR South Africa taking over 60% of the business. Through the acquisition by a strong partner like SPAR South Africa, it was possible for the SPAR Switzerland organisation to remain in place and for the jobs of all SPAR employees to be secured. As Stefan Leuthold said when he presented the succession plan in March: “SPAR remains SPAR.”

In the last 12 months, executives of SPAR South Africa have gained deeper insight into the Swiss retail market and the activities of SPAR Switzerland. The strategic direction of the company has been refined and various plans for improved profitability and job security have been developed. The transformation phase is now complete and the course for future success has been set.

Rob Philipson has actively supported the SPAR Switzerland management team since last autumn and played a central role in the re-structuring of SPAR Switzerland. He has proven leadership qualities and extensive knowledge of the retail industry and the SPAR family.

After 17 years leading SPAR Switzerland, Stefan Leuthold has been able to conduct the generational change that has been going on for the past year. As a member of the Board of Directors, he will continue to actively contribute to the strategic direction of the company.
