October 16, 2018 IN THE CATEGORY: Awards and prizes

John Agnew of SPAR UK Partner, Henderson Group in Northern Ireland, was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award at this year’s UK Retail Industry Awards.

Recently retired as Chairman of the family business, John Agnew has been a beacon of retailing best practice for many years.

The family business dates back more than 120 years and John Agnew’s involvement began some 61 years ago in 1957, when he joined the company run by his father, William. In the intervening years, he has succeeded in shaping the business into what it is today. This included taking on the license to operate the SPAR Brand in Northern Ireland in 1960, as well as the introduction of EUROSPAR Supermarkets some 40 years later.

A worthy winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award, John Agnew has made a great impact on convenience retailing, not only in Northern Ireland but across the United Kingdom and supported the ongoing expansion of the brand globally.

About SPAR UK

The United Kingdom (UK) became a member of SPAR in 1956 when a group of independent wholesalers obtained the SPAR licence from SPAR International. There are five regional partners with strategically placed Distribution Centres in each region. A Central Office located in London provides national Marketing and Buying services for the group and supports the development of the SPAR Brand in the UK.

SPAR has led the convenience market in the UK for many years but has faced increasing competition in recent times. Always innovative, SPAR Partners have continued to grow the brand. A combination of independently-owned licensed retailers and company-owned stores spanning forecourts, airports, train stations, city centres and local neighbourhoods can be found throughout the country.
