SPAR Gran Canaria is celebrating its 35th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the SPAR Spain regional operator has organised a series of events showcasing its strong commitment to local communities, healthy eating, and sports.

In September, SPAR Gran Canaria renewed its support to the Las Palmas Down Syndrome Association. This is the third consecutive year the company is contributing to improving the living conditions of over a hundred families.

SPAR Gran Canaria is also reaffirming its ‘Five a Day’ Campaign that promotes the consumption of fruit and vegetables for a healthier lifestyle. Within this scope, the second SPAR Yrichen Charity Golf Tournament took place during the summer in support of the Spanish Association against Cancer.

SPAR Gran Canaria has always been committed to the preservation of local cultures. Since 2001, the company has sponsored a vessel, the ‘SPAR Guerrero del Río’ (river warrior), during the annual Lateen sailing race, helping preserve this unique nautical modality. This year, SPAR colleagues also attended a sailing day to get familiar with sailing skills and to foster team spirit.

The SPAR operator also sponsors a workshop at the Canarias Museum where children and their families get acquainted with local, traditional foods. At the workshop, participants learn to prepare gofio, a flour made with maize and a variety of wheat used in a healthy traditional dish.

SPAR Gran Canaria has again supported the Circular Extrema Villa Moya Run, held after a two and a half year hiatus. SPAR stores in Agüimes collaborated with the 24^th edition Swim Crossing of Playa de Arinaga that attracted 300 participants.

Anniversary activities were ongoing during October with store openings, raffles, thousands of instore gifts, and discounts. With 194 stores covering Gran Canaria’s 21 municipalities, SPAR is truly close to its communities, or as they say in Spanish: ‘SPAR, Siempre Cerca de Ti’.
