July 30, 2026 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

In the North of China, SPAR China partner SPAR Shandong continues to develop its store network with the reopening of modernised supermarkets across Qingdao, Jinan, Weihai, and Yantai.

These latest store openings focus on upgraded store layouts, enhanced fresh food departments, improved customer service, and new retail technologies.

Reopened supermarkets across June

On June 18, the SPAR Shandong Qingdao West Coast New Area Wuyue Plaza supermarket reopened following a comprehensive modernisation. Located on the basement level of Wuyue Plaza in Qingdao’s Huangdao District, the large-format hypermarket has been open since 2019. The refurbished supermarket introduces an improved spatial layout, widened aisles, clearer category displays, and an upgraded product assortment designed to meet changing customer expectations for convenient and experiential shopping. Fresh food and food-to-go remain a core part of the supermarket offer, with freshly prepared meals and instore bakery providing fresh food for immediate consumption. Digital enhancements include smart lighting and self-checkout equipment, alongside services including dedicated dining and rest area with water dispensers and charging facilities.

On the same day, the SPAR Shandong Weihai Hanlefang supermarket and SPAR Shandong Jinan Huashan Quanhuaju supermarket also reopened, bringing refreshed environments, product ranges, and services to more urban communities.

Further store developments in July

On July 10, the SPAR Shandong Yantai Laiyang Wanda Plaza supermarket and SPAR Shandong Weihai Huancui Wanda Plaza supermarket reopened after significant upgrades. Both supermarkets have been redesigned around market-style shopping scenarios, with fresh food, bakery, and light-meal areas supported by wider aisles, open kitchens, and freshly made dining zones. The instore product assortment across both supermarkets has also been expanded and refined, with seasonal fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry, eggs, and products supplied through SPAR Shandong’s direct sourcing network.

On 17 July, two additional SPAR Shandong supermarkets reopened in Jinan and Qingdao. The SPAR Shandong Jinan West Second Ring Road supermarket, which first opened in 2012, once again welcomed customers. With a retail area of more than 3,200m2, the supermarket has adopted a new-generation store concept with ready-to-eat dining sections and a bakery. The SPAR Shandong Qingdao Chengyang Wanda supermarket also reopened with an enhanced store layout, new products, and improved customer services, further strengthening SPAR Shandong’s neighbourhood supermarket offer.

About SPAR China

The SPAR brand was introduced to China in 2004 with the signing of the licence agreement for the Shandong province. Today, two core partners build the brand in the north and south, extending the communities having access to SPAR stores. The privately-owned retail chains licensed to operate the SPAR brand have a cooperative relationship. As a result, this partnership aligns with the original SPAR mission of working together to reduce costs, maximise sales, and increase profits.
