At these five pilot locations, SPAR Austria and JET are demonstrating what modern shopping at petrol stations in Austria could look like in the future: fresh, fast, high-quality, and consistently tailored to customers’ needs,” said SPAR Austria CEO Hans K. Reisch.
JET and SPAR Austria are working together to develop the forecourt stores at five pilot locations in Austria. Customers can expect a carefully selected range of about 1,500 products, providing a supermarket type offering even in a retail sales area averaging 80m². The stores open daily, including all public holidays, between 6 am and 10 pm.
In addition to traditional products for quick shopping, the focus is on fresh food, chilled snacks, and a wide selection of drinks. The range is optimised for the sales area and comprises international and SPAR own brand products, to which the supermarket price guarantee applies. This means that all SPAR own brand products, fruit, vegetables, meat, freshly baked bread and pastries are just as affordable as in a SPAR supermarket. Everyday essentials are available in a compact, clearly laid-out format.
The store design focuses on a bright, open layout with clear structures and high shelves. Product categories are clearly arranged, enabling quick, intuitive shopping. Natural materials, modern lighting and an appealing presentation of the fresh food sections create a pleasant shopping atmosphere.

The origins of the SPAR brand in Austria date back to 1954. The current SPAR AG was created in 1970 when the original founding families joined other regional wholesalers to form SPAR Austria AG, a 100% privately owned Austrian company. Company-owned stores operate throughout the country in the multi-format retail strategy developed since the 1960’s, whilst independent retailers operate under sub-license from SPAR Austria and continue building the brand’s presence.
