SPAR Athienitis reopens in Zimbabwe following extensive upgrade

September 6, 2022 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

SPAR Athienitis, situated in the Fife Avenue shopping centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, has reopened its doors after extensive renovations. The new-look SPAR Supermarket boasts wider shopping aisles, an increased range, and a new gifting and home décor section.

The store has undergone a significant transformation, with an increase of 600m2 (about twice the area of a tennis court) in the trading area, as well as a stand-alone 196m2 TOPS at SPAR. Nearly 500m2 of the newly refurbished store is dedicated to fresh and frozen products, highlighting SPAR’s “fresh is best” policy.

SPAR Athienitis’ state-of-the-art fixtures and fittings reflect retail supermarket trends of the future, with new and improved shelving, innovative point of sale technology, focus lighting and LED linear lighting. The store has a warm, inviting ambience, with minute attention to detail, guaranteed to improve the customer shopping experience.

Featuring top-notch service departments, the instore offering includes high-quality baked goods and confectionery, a wide selection of meals-to-go, and an extensive delicatessen. Moreover, a specialised butchery department offers meat cut to order and traditional pre-packaged cuts.

Seventy-eight team members run the new store and have undergone extensive training by the SPAR Zimbabwe retail operations division.

This is the first SPAR supermarket in Zimbabwe to use CO2 as a refrigerant. The CO2 refrigeration system has zero Ozone-Depleting Potential and a Global Warming Potential of 1, which is very low. The system is also highly energy efficient.

SPAR Supermarkets across Zimbabwe are also well-known for leading the way in monthly Presidential Clean-Ups, and for their ongoing community efforts in recycling and reducing waste. All SPAR carrier bags are made from 100% recycled plastic, and corporate stores also offer plastic-free alternatives to reduce reliance on single-use plastic bags.

About SPAR Zimbabwe

In 1967, Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) became the 13th country to join the SPAR network after signing a licence agreement with SPAR International.

In 2015, an independent retailer, Darren Lanҫa, took over the licence for the SPAR Brand in Zimbabwe after the previous licence holder divested this retail division.

Despite the challenging economic environment, SPAR Zimbabwe continues to grow its store network. It also remains actively involved in the local community, helping to make a difference through charitable sponsored events.
