DESPAR Italia partner Aspiag Service expands in Trieste

September 8, 2021 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

DESPAR Italia partner Aspiag Service has expanded the brand in Trieste by opening a new EUROSPAR. The company-owned supermarket is the 18th SPAR store in Friuli Venezia Giulia and was developed through a public-private initiative to modernise a previously run-down area called Former Maddalena. The multi-storey construction now includes a EUROSPAR Supermarket with a modern, distinctive layout. This new building also incorporates the latest-generation technologies, such as energy-efficient air conditioning and LED lighting throughout.

The EUROSPAR store offers a large product choice and shopping convenience on a sales area of almost 1800m2. The large fresh food sections are a real highlight, serving fruit and vegetables, bakery and pastries, as well as served counters for fresh meats and fish, cheese and cold cuts, and food-to-go options.

The distinctive product offering includes a wide range of local fresh and dry specialities, grouped under the ‘Sapori del nostro Territorio’ brand. The instore wine cellar helps promote local supply chains and producers. Among the non-food selection are newspapers, magazines and books, toys, and textile articles.

Shopping convenience is available also for e-commerce customers. This EUROSPAR has a delivery service for fresh products, with online orders prepared instore during opening hours. The new supermarket employs 47 team members, an important contribution to local employment. A parking lot in the building’s basement offers 115 car parking spots and over 30 spots for motorcycles, connected with the store via lifts and escalators in a convenient sheltered route.

Local officials who attended the opening ceremony, including the Mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza, and the President of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Massimiliano Fedriga, highlighted the strong bonds between the SPAR Brand and its local communities.

The previously run-down urban area has been transformed into a vital spot, with a multifunctional building contributing to the local economy as well as better life quality for its local community. Aspiag Service’s development strategy successfully links local investment with an active contribution to the local communities where it operates the SPAR Brand.

About SPAR Italy

SPAR Italy, known locally as DESPAR Italia, was first granted the SPAR Brand’s licence in 1959. The first store opened in 1960. With it, SPAR became the first partnership of retailers and wholesalers to operate in the country. In addition, SPAR Italy licenses regional partners, all of whom work together to grow the brand across the country.

The DESPAR Partners operate stores under three formats: DESPAR Neighbourhood Supermarkets, EUROSPAR Supermarkets, and INTERSPAR Hypermarkets. Many of the larger format stores are company-owned, reflecting the scale of investment required. While the company achieves most of its turnover through these larger format stores, the independently owned neighbourhood supermarkets remain vital.
