SPAR Greece opens first eight supermarkets

August 9, 2018 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

The SPAR Partner in Greece, SPAR Hellas, has set itself the ambitious plan of having 80 SPAR stores open by the end of 2018 and more then 300 over the next four years. So far, SPAR Hellas is on track with its expansion plans, having already opened eight stores since officially re-launching the brand in the country earlier this year.

To date, the biggest investments have been made on the island of Naxos where in June, a new store, SPAR Koutelieris, was opened. A conversion of an existing store, SPAR Koutelieris has double the sales space, growing from 800m2 to 1,500m2. There are 50 parking spaces available and 45 new jobs have been created.

SPAR Greece also operates stores on the islands of Skiathos, Crete, Kos and Kefalonia, as well as in Athens. The SPAR Partner is looking to open more stores in the cities of Larissa and Agrinio and on Rhodes and Kythnos, with the aim of having 18 SPAR Supermarkets open by the end of August.

Good progress has been made in the development of SPAR Own Brand ranges in Greece with more than 550 own brand products available in the market. Thanks to the SPAR Partner’s collaboration with local suppliers, it’s estimated that the total SPAR Own Brand collection will exceed 900 products by the end of 2018.

SPAR Greece has been strategic about the location of stores in the country, focusing on the most touristic areas to benefit from the fact that the brand is globally so well recognised. Its ultimate goal is to create and manage the largest cooperative network of retail outlets by independent retailers in the country.
