August 5, 2015 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

Udmurtia, a province of 1.6 million inhabitants 1,300km east of Moscow, is the newest region in Russia to introduce the SPAR Brand.

The first store to open is a 2,400m2 EUROSPAR Supermarket converted from a local chain operated by the appointed licence partner for SPAR in this region. Located to the North East of the capital city, Izhevsk, the supermarket is in an industrial area formerly known for producing paper. The opening on 17th July was a festive event for all to enjoy and local media were also present to record the occasion. The EUROSPAR Supermarket was opened by Mr. Oleg Radionov, Minister for Industry and Trade, who welcomed SPAR’s entry as an advantage and enhancement to the area. He was accompanied by the SPAR licence holder, SPAR Russia and SPAR International.

David Moore, SPAR International business development manager, expressed delight with the supermarket, saying: “The EUROSPAR is an excellent addition to the regeneration of this area. There are many new services for customers to enjoy including Café, pizza, sushi, fresh fish as well as a good selection of products sourced through SPAR Russia and a range of SPAR International private label in addition to the expanded service areas of bakery, delicatessen and food-to-go.”

Shoppers from the entire area turned out for the opening ceremony, which included many activities for shoppers both on the stage outside the store as well as promotional offers and taste-testing instore. A SPAR branded blimp flying above the shopping complex was clearly visible from far away.

The new variety of food-to-go and delicatessen has been welcomed by consumers, who are also appreciative of the expanded bakery department. The inclusion of the Café has created a location to sit and relax whilst enjoying quality products enhancing the shopping experience. The improved instore offer has resulted in an increase in both customer transactions and turnover. The EUROSPAR can manage the high trading frequency through the 14 checkouts and also offers both a Home Delivery service and a ‘Click & Collect’ solution to meet consumer needs.

SPAR International worked with the SPAR Partner to differentiate the EUROSPAR offer in this highly competitive trading environment. A combination of existing equipment which was refurbished and investment into new checkout furniture, food islands, the Café, scales and service department communication materials has resulted in an outstanding supermarket.

The EUROSPAR supermarket is situated in a complex owned by the SPAR Partner which includes a food court, a gymnasium, a health spa, complimentary retail units and sufficient parking with 110 car parking spaces.
