SPAR UK Partner invests £2.6m in new EUROSPAR

August 23, 2018 IN THE CATEGORY: Store openings

SPAR UK Partner, Henderson Group, has opened a new EUROSPAR in Dromore, County Down, creating 40 jobs. A conversion of an existing SPAR forecourt store, the new EUROSPAR features a deli and butchery counter and 24-hour pay at pump facilities.

Store owner, Chris McDonald, said: “Having started working in the retail sector when I was 16, I’ve learnt the importance of good customer care. Our business has expanded into more than just a convenience store, with our customers now wanting a complete shopping experience, delivered by the EUROSPAR Brand. The retail sector has changed in the last few years, with customers preferring to do several small shops throughout the week.”

An extensive renovation project was undertaken to create the new store, which involved the construction of a new multi-storey complex, major landscaping and the installation of fuel tanks.

Chris added: “We demolished our old store and converted the space into additional car parking. We opened under the EUROSPAR Brand as the Henderson Group’s range of products and same-day delivery means we can fulfil the needs of our customers. The new store has a butcher’s counter, salad bar and Barista Bar coffee station, and offers a wide variety of locally sourced products, available through Henderson’s enjoy local and The Kitchen ranges. The store is very much a family business. My wife Clare played an instrumental role throughout the project and my five children are all employees.

“We opened at the start of June and the response from customers so far has been overwhelming. Customers have told me they don’t feel the need to go outside of Dromore for groceries as they have everything they need under one roof.”

About SPAR UK

The United Kingdom (UK) became a member of SPAR in 1956 when a group of independent wholesalers obtained the SPAR licence from SPAR International. There are five regional partners with strategically placed Distribution Centres in each region. A Central Office located in London provides national Marketing and Buying services for the group and supports the development of the SPAR Brand in the UK.

SPAR has led the convenience market in the UK for many years but has faced increasing competition in recent times. Always innovative, SPAR Partners have continued to grow the brand. A combination of independently-owned licensed retailers and company-owned stores spanning forecourts, airports, train stations, city centres and local neighbourhoods can be found throughout the country.
