SPAR Hungary donated €545,000 to social initiatives and charitable causes in 2017. The SPAR Partner has focused on supporting local communities and charities for many years. Here are just some of the community projects they were involved in last year.

The Hungarian Maltese Charity Service

The partnership between SPAR and the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service began more than 20 years ago. As part of its ongoing support, SPAR Hungary offers donation cards for the Charity Service in most SPAR stores.

Managing food waste is an important social problem and to help address this issue, SPAR Hungary launched a special food-saving campaign in 2017. For one month, the customers of three SPAR Supermarkets in Budapest were asked to donate food to families in need through the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service. More than 309 tons of food was collected through the “Food for you, a gift to others” campaign, providing 34,000 gift packages for families in need.

SPAR Budapest Marathon

SPAR Hungary once again showed great commitment to the promotion of exercise in 2017 by sponsoring the 32nd SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival. Nearly 32,000 runners and a large crowd of supporters were present at the event. In addition to calling attention to various social initiatives, the Festival allowed for the collection of 1,000 children’s books for children in need.

Awards for charity work

In 2017, SPAR Hungary received the Disability Friendly Workplace Award for the fourth time and a special prize for cooperation with the Janka Tanya charity, supporting young people with autism.

SPAR and the Faculty of Food Sciences

In October 2017, SPAR donated about €15,000 to the Faculty of Food Sciences at Szent István University. During the 13 years of cooperation between the two organisations, numerous innovative initiatives were implemented in the area of food safety.

Other ongoing initiatives

Support for leukemia patients

SPAR Hungary has been supporting the work of the Foundation for Children with Leukemia for many years. During this longstanding collaboration, hundreds of affected families with children suffering from leukemia have been supported.

Support of smaller charities

Three years ago, SPAR Hungary launched a programme to support smaller charities. Through the portal, www.sparsegitokezek.hu, smaller charitable bodies can apply for assistance – providing an equal chance for all organisations. As a result, SPAR has been able to support nearly 100 smaller charities, associations and local initiatives in a wide range of fields, from education to art and health.

The move to license independent retailers to operate the SPAR Brand has proven to be very successful for Hungary, with new stores meeting the needs of a larger number of shoppers.
